The device is used for preparation of samples of cement materials (limestone, clay, cement, raw mix, clinker and others), of silicates, refractories, glasses, enamels, welding fluxes, metallurgical slags, ferrous and non-ferrous metal ores, synthetic detergents, non-ferrous and ferrous metals and their alloys and so on by means of fusion with borate fluxes for the X-ray fluorescence analysis.

Brief Technical and Economical Data

Mass - about 10 kg

Dimensions (height,depth,width) -300x260x280 mm

internal furnace volume - diameter - 70 mm,

- height - 70 mm

Furnace working temperature - 800 - 1200° C

Sample heating rate - up to 500 deg/min

Furnace temperature change rate - up to 200 deg/min

Mean waiting mode power (700° C) - under 0,3 kVA

Time for bringing out to the waiting mode when switching on the device - less than 7 min

Temperature control fineness - under ± 1° C

Power supply - single-phase network - 220V,50 c.p.s.

Following a preset program a microprocessor carries out the introduction of the sample to be fused into the device, its transportation to the furnace, its fusion under predetermined temperature-time conditions, its taking out of the furnace, emitter forming and its removal from the device.

The possibility exists of fusion performing in the controllable gas atmosphere (air, carbon dioxide, argon ets).

Modifications of the device make it possible to prepare the samples for the X-ray fluorescence analysis by two methods:

1. Method of fusion on a graphite disk-substrate followed by mechanical molding of the melt on the disk (the method of the institute of Giprocement, Russia). The two-layer disk (glass-graphite) obtained is used for the analysis. The time of the sample preparation since the moment of loading of the substrate with the sample and flux mix is 3-5 minutes. The required amount of flux for one sample is 1-2 grams.

The diameter of the emitter is 30-40 mm.

The fusion temperature is 800-1150° C in accordance with the analysis method and purpose. The analysis of silicate materials for readily volatile chlorides of alkali metals as well as for sulfur in various valent states is a possibility.

2. Method of fusion in a graphite crucible followed by the gravity molding of the melt and bead separation from the crucible (the method of Herzog Co., Germany).

The time of the sample preparation is about 10 min.

The required amount of flux is 5-10 grams.

The diameter of the emitter is 28-35 mm. The fusion temperature is 950-1150° C.

Advantages.

As compared with similar models of fusion devices using electrical heaters the device MAKC-2M is 15-50 times lighter by weight, 10-50 times smaller, 10 times more economic in power consumption and amount of flux used, no forced water cooling and connection of the power electrical network is necessary. The presence of the low-inertia microfurnace makes it possible to combine in the device the advantages of the powerful heating by high-frequency currents and of high temperature maintaining stability of a muffle furnace.

Use of МАКС-2М for Chemical Analysis

The low inertia of the furnace, the high fineness of the temperature maintanence, a possibility of sample introduction into the furnace and its removal from the furnace at a temperature lower than the working one, a possibility of sample blowing by air or inert gas make possible the thermal treatment of the sample for the chemical analysis at various temperature levels through substitution of several muffle furnaces set to different temperatures by one МАКС-2М device as well as the following:

1. fusion in standard platinum crucibles;

2. fusion in graphite crucibles instead of platinum ones;

3. more rapid determination of loss on ignition (about 10 min);

4. determination of loss on ignition in chloride- and sulfate- bearing samples required for the chemical and X-ray fluorescence analysis of such materials as cement rotery kiln electrostatic precipitator dust, and the like;

5. determination of waste coal content of cement and other materials.

The МАКС-2М device is fabricated by close joint-stock company “КОС”.
